Apache Trail: Part 3

This picture is of Roosevelt Dam on the Salt River. The dam was extended about 15-20 years ago to provide additional flood protection. The bridge was built across Roosevelt Lake to keep Globe and Payson connected by highway. The old route was across the dam, but that route was lost with the reconstruction.

Apache Trail: Part 2

These pictures show Canyon Lake, with the saguaro cacti in the foreground and one of the one-lane bridges on the route. This section is paved and in good shape.

Apache Trail

Yesterday, cousins Jim and Pat took Betty and me (along with Sami) on a 125-mile trip on the Apache Trail. One section of the trail is the old stage coach and freight wagon route from Mesa to Globe, AZ. Twenty-two miles of the route is still unpaved, and rough in parts.
The trip provides views of breathtaking canyons, desert lakes (Canyon, Apache, Roosevelt), towering saguaro cacti and desert wildflowers.  In the pictures, Betty and I are at Tortilla Flat, AZ, an old stagecoach stop with a saloon which has served travelers for over 100 years. The old "facilities" have been replaced with modern restrooms.

Boyce Thompson Arboretum

I had a chance the other day to visit the Boyce Thompson Arboretum near Superior, AZ. There are wonderful desert exhibits with several trails. If you ever in this area (East of Mesa, AZ) I would recommend you stop and visit. You can spend an hour or all day, depending on your schedule.
Check the web for more information:

Party in Queen Creek, AZ

Yesterday, Betty and I went to the home of Ed and Karen Fabritiis in Queen Creek, Az. Ed let us sit on his Harley, but I don't have a license to drive, so we did not go out for a "spin."
We did sit with our feet in the water of the pool. It sure felt good in the 80+ degree day.

The adults had a great time tasting the wines and eating lots of great food.

Thanks to Ed and Karen for a great time.

Warmest regards, Gus

Spring in Arizona!!

Boy, did the weather ever change today. Instead of the sunny 80 degree days we have had, it has rained and hailed off and on all day, with a high temperature of 50 degrees! What a surprise! I am glad I did not plan on attending a Spring Training baseball game today.
I think it will stay cold tomorrow and then turn nice again. The rare cold day does make me appreciate the mostly warm, sunny days.

St. Patrick's Day

Hope you all had a great St. Patrick's Day. Betty, Sami and I spent the traveling from Casa Grande, AZ, to Gold Canyon, AZ.  Cousin Pat made a pot of corned beef and cabbage and three other couples joined us for dinner at Gold Canyon RV and Golf Resort.
The other couples supplied food and a good time.
