Reversing Rapids

I visited the reveresing rapids in St. John, NB, yesterdy. This picture was taken at low tide when the the water from the St. John River was flowing from right to left into the Bay of Fundy. Six hours later I went back for high tide and the water from the Bay of Fundy was pushing the St. John River "upstream" and the rapids were reversed. At "slack time" between high and low tide, the water is calm. At low tide as shown, there are about 10 million gallons of water per minute flowing through this channel.

1960 Thunderbird

Last evening I got to visit with my friends Blair and Joan who live in Nauwigewauk, New Brunswick, Canada. Blair has restored this 1960 Thunderbird and they are preparing to leave on a 7-week trip across Canada with over 100 other owners of antique and classic cars.

Kingsbrae Garden

After lunch at the Kingsbrae Garden today, I toured the 27-acre garden and enjoyed some of the beautiful flowers. It is still early for some of the varieties, but the garden is still very beautiful. The garden did not open until 1998, but is part of an estate with a long history of fine gardens.
The Premiers' Arboretum showcases the provincial trees of Canada and commemorates the 1997 Premiers' Conference held in St. Andrews, NB.

Jail Time!

I ended up in a jail today and they even tried to hang me, but I turned the tables when I got to the court house and became the judge. I set myself free!

Driving on the Ocean Floor

This picture was taken while Cousin Pat was driving on the ocean floor (the tide is out) on the way to Minister's Island. The island is a 500 acre tidal island on which Sir William Van Horne built a 12,000 sq. ft. "cottage" in the middle 1890s. Van Horne used the money he made building the Canadian Pacific Railway to establish this summer home and to promote tourism in the area.

New Brunswick, Canada

Here I am , with Betty and Billy, sitting in front of our campground in St. Andrew, New Brunswick. The water behind us is Passamaquoddy Bay, part of the Bay of Fundy. In this picture the tide is in, which makes the water about 30 feet higher than when the tide is out. St. Andrew is a beautiful town with many structures going back to around 1800, although people have lived here much longer. Many English Loyalists relocated to this area from the American Colonies before and during the Revolutionary War.

Aunt Helen

Yesterday I met Cousin Jim's Aunt Helen. Helen lives in Springfield, MA, and is 94 years old. She is one of four younger sisters of Jim's father. In addition to the four sisters, he also had three older brothers. Helen has three sons who live in the area.
